They have been thoroughly researched from the autographs, and first or earliest editions to exist. Everything in dark print is copied from the original sources. Editorial suggestions for fingering, pedaling, and interpretation have been added in light print to distinguish them clearly from Schubert's writing. Schubert was center of a circle of devoted friends and wealthy patrons who included the leading writers. dramatists, singers, painters and poets of Vienna. Some of these friends held Schubertiaden, or evening musicales at which only the works of Schubert were performed, sometimes by Schubert himself. Selected favorites from among these dances are included in thie present volume. They are arranged so that several may be played in succession in the same key.
